Mittral vs ProcurementExpress
ProcurementExpress is purchasing software for finance teams, with a strong lean towards grant-funded organisations: budgets checked at approval, receiving, invoice matching and a connection to accounting software, priced by how much spend you manage. Mittral is for small and mid-sized teams who need purchase requests approved and a purchase order sent to the supplier, priced by users and orders, with a free plan.
ProcurementExpress: purchase approvals, budget visibility and records that help finance teams stay in control. [6]
Side by side
| What | Mittral | ProcurementExpress |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | Free forever: 2 users, 10 purchase orders a month, 1 GB. No card. | No free plan listed. New customers get 14 days free with full access to all features, no credit card required. [1] |
| Cheapest paid plan | $39 a month for 5 users and 75 purchase orders a month (USD, billed monthly). | Basic: $415 per month to manage up to $10k of spend a month, with self-service set-up, one organisation and basic reporting. [1] |
| How pricing scales | Per workspace, by users and purchase orders a month: Starter $39, Growth $128, Business $227, Enterprise $550. No overage charges. | By spend managed a month: Basic $415 (up to $10k), Better $900 (up to $1m), a third plan at $2,550 (up to $10m). Enterprise (up to $50m) is priced on request. User limits are not stated. Punch-outs to online stores start on Better. [1] |
| Approval routed by amount | Every request is routed by its total excluding tax. On a person’s approval path they have their own limit; above it the request goes to each approver in turn until one whose limit covers the total signs it off. People without a path follow a workspace rule an admin sets. | Yes: approval limits, and approval flows that adapt to purchase amount, department or project. Approvers see the budget, with committed and remaining funds, before approving, and one purchase line can be split across budgets, departments or projects. [2] |
| Several approvers in sequence | Yes: each approver on the path in turn, then super users when no limit covers the total. | Yes: custom approval paths by department, supplier or purchase amount, with several approvers at any stage and a choice of all or any one approving. [3] |
| Self-approval blocked | Nobody can approve a request they raised, even if they are an approver on its path. | Their approvals settings include “self-approval rules”; whether self-approval can be blocked is not stated. [2] |
| Approver away | An approver, or an admin for them, marks the days they are away. Requests move on to the next approver on the path or to super users, or to a colleague an admin names to cover, who decides with the away approver’s limit. | Not stated on their site. [2] |
| PO sent to the supplier | After the final approval, Mittral generates a numbered purchase order as a PDF and emails it to the supplier. | Not stated on their site. [2] |
| Revise, resend, cancel a PO | An issued purchase order can be revised, sent again or cancelled by the requester or an admin, and its history stays on the request. | Not stated on their site. [2] |
| Your logo on the PO | On Business and Enterprise, the purchase order PDF and supplier email carry your own logo and colour; other plans use Mittral’s template with a small “Powered by Mittral” line. | Not stated on their site. [2] |
| Send from your own email | On Business and Enterprise, supplier orders can be sent from your own email address, through Microsoft 365 or your mail server’s SMTP settings. | Not stated on their site. [2] |
| Several buying entities | One workspace holds several buying entities, each with its own legal name, address and VAT number on its orders, and branches under them that print as the delivery location. | One organisation on Basic and Better, up to five on the $2,550 plan, unlimited on Enterprise. [1] |
| Quotes and photos on a request | A request can carry PDF, JPG or PNG attachments, up to 10 files, such as the supplier’s quote or a photo. | Yes: quotes, approvals and invoices are attached to the purchase order. [4] |
| Duplicate quote warning | A quote or reference number entered on a request is checked against other requests awaiting approval or already approved, and a possible duplicate is flagged before submission. | Not stated on their site. [2] |
| Audit log | Admins have an audit log of changes made in the workspace. | Purchase details, approvals and supporting documents kept together, with the approval history of each purchase, for audit preparation. [5] |
| Getting data out | Starter, Growth, Business and Enterprise include CSV export of issued orders and signed webhooks that send each issued order to your own systems. A workspace admin can export the workspace’s records and files, and delete the workspace after a grace period in which the deletion can be cancelled, from the app. | Reporting on every plan (basic, standard or advanced by plan) and SFTP access on Enterprise. Other ways to export data are not stated. [1] |
| Accounting connection | Mittral does not connect to accounting software. Issued orders leave by CSV export and webhooks on paid plans. | Yes: two-way sync with accounting software: purchase orders and invoices go across, and payment status comes back. [4] |
| Goods receipt and invoice matching | Not included. Mittral covers purchase requests, approvals and purchase orders. It does not receive goods, hold budgets, match invoices, pay suppliers or keep stock. | Yes: receiving and fulfilment against purchase orders, and invoice capture with matching to purchase orders (Scan & Match). Requests for quote, batch supplier payments and grant-specific compliance checks are also listed. [2] |
| Support | Business and Enterprise include dedicated support, and the workspace can be set up with you. | All plans include onboarding, documentation and support; their FAQ says Professional and Enterprise plans include priority support. The $2,550 plan adds a dedicated implementer and Enterprise an account manager. [1] |
Choose Mittral if
- You want to start on a free plan and pay $39 a month when you outgrow it, rather than $415 a month for ProcurementExpress’s Basic plan.
- You would rather pay by users and purchase orders than by the amount of spend you manage.
- You need the approved order sent to the supplier as a PDF by email, which ProcurementExpress’s pages don’t describe.
- You want each approver to have their own limit, nobody approving their own request, and cover when an approver is away.
- You don’t need budgets, invoice matching or an accounting connection, and a simpler tool suits your team.
Choose ProcurementExpress if
- You want budgets checked at approval, with committed and remaining funds shown on the order and spend split across budgets, departments or projects.
- You want goods receipt and invoice matching against purchase orders in the same product. Mittral doesn’t do either.
- You want purchase orders, bills and payment status synced with your accounting software. Mittral doesn’t connect to accounting software.
- You run a grant-funded organisation and want purchases checked against each funding source’s rules and records kept for audit.
- You want requests for quote, punch-out ordering from online stores or batch supplier payments.
In short
ProcurementExpress covers more of the purchasing cycle than Mittral: budgets, receiving, invoice matching and an accounting connection, built with grant-funded finance teams in mind and priced from $415 a month by spend managed. Mittral does less on purpose: requests, approvals and a purchase order emailed to the supplier, with a free plan and paid plans priced by users and orders from a lower starting price. If you need budgets and invoices handled in one place, ProcurementExpress fits; if you need approved orders out to suppliers without the rest, Mittral is the simpler choice.
